W 1968 roku amerykańska pisarka i radykalna feministka Valerie Solanas (1936-1988) wchodzi do pracowni Andy Warhola – legendarnej Fabryki – i zaczyna strzelać, raniąc artystę oraz dwie inne osoby. Po całym zdarzeniu, oddając się dobrowolnie w ręce policji, powiedziała: „On miał po prostu zbyt dużo władzy nade mną”. Pisarka, u której zdiagnozowano schizofrenię paranoidalną, została skazana na trzy lata więzienia.
Rok przed całym zajściem Solanas wydaje własnym sumptem manifest zatytułowany S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men). W tekście oskarża mężczyzn o doprowadzenie świata do ruiny i całkowite opanowanie przez nich porządku społecznego, uwzględniające jedynie męskie potrzeby. Jedyną szansą na naprawę tej sytuacji jest rewolta kobiet. Aby osiągnąć ten cel, postuluje powołanie S.C.U.M. – kobiecej organizacji mającej za zadanie obalenie obowiązującego systemu społecznego oraz wyeliminowanie wszystkich zbędnych mężczyzn.
W tym samym czasie Solanas próbuje przebić się do nowojorskiego środowiska skupionego wokół Warhola. Bezskutecznie naciska na niego, by pomógł jej zrealizować napisaną przez nią sztukę Up Your Ass. Gdy ten odmawia Solanas, postanawia go zastrzelić, próbując tym samym wcielić w życie idee S.C.U.M.
Historia ta staje się punktem wyjścia wystawy Liliany Piskorskiej zatytułowanej SCUM. Artystka powołuje do życia fikcyjną radykalną bojówkę dziewczyńską, dla której Valerie Solanas pozostaje obiektem kultu. Fikcyjność tej sytuacji pozwala Lilianie na stworzenie hiperbolicznej opowieści, gdzie kreowane przez nią bohaterki stają się jej swoistym alter ego.
Bojówkarze SCUM działają z zaskoczenia. Ich tożsamość jest anonimowa, ich liczba niedoprecyzowana. Łączą je intymne relacje. Podejmują się krytycznych aktów w stosunku do całego systemu artystycznego. Ich akcje wynikają, podobnie jak u Solanas, z chęci obalenia męskiej dominacji. Działając na marginesie, gdzie rodzi się wszelka nienormatywność, próbują zniszczyć to, co istnieje w centrum. Nie lubią Andy Warhola, uprzywilejowanej ekonomicznie i politycznie sztuki, patriarchalnych i zakurzonych instytucji…
Na wystawie Liliana Piskorska wykorzystuje historię Valerie Solanas i Andy Warhola po to, aby sprowokować opowieść o wykluczeniu i próbie odzyskiwania tego, co z różnych powodów pozostaje niewidoczne. Zdarzenie to może również posłużyć w sposób symboliczny jako klucz do zrozumienia dychotomii pomiędzy centrum a peryferyjnością – dwiema kategoriami od zawsze funkcjonującymi w świecie sztuki. Pomimo faktu, że główny akcent w działaniach SCUM odnosi się do obszaru artystycznego, konfabulacja, jaką proponuje artystka, może również otwierać przed nami subwersywną grę dotyczącą całego porządku społecznego.

Liliana Piskorska (ur. 1988) – absolwentka Wydziału Sztuk Pięknych Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, gdzie obecnie kontynuuje naukę na studiach doktoranckich. W jej pracach pojawiają się wątki z jednej strony feministyczne, choć bardziej w kategorii poszukiwań tożsamościowych czy pastiszowych (gra z własnym wizerunkiem), a z drugiej strony są to działania o charakterze analitycznym, odnoszącym się do sytuacji społeczno-kulturowej. Pole jej zainteresowań obejmuje wątki związane z cielesnością, zwierzęcością, relacjami władzy oraz subwersywnym traktowaniem normatywności i siebie. Mieszka w Toruniu.
In 1968, an American writer and radical feminist Valerie Solanas (1936-1988) enters the studio of Andy Warhol – the legendary Factory – and starts shooting, wounding the artist and two other people. After the incident, giving herself voluntarily up to the police, she said: „He had simply too much control over my life.” The writer, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to three years in prison.
The year before this accident Solanas self-releases a manifesto titled S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men). In this text she accuses the men of bringing the world into ruin and totally mastering the social order, taking into account only men’s needs. The only chance to reclaim this situation is the revolt of women. To accomplish this goal, she proposes the establishment of S.C.U.M. – Women’s organizations with the task of overthrowing the existing social system and eliminating all unnecessary men.
At the same time, Solanas is trying to break into the New York bohema centered around Warhol. Unsuccessfully pressured him to help implement her play called Up Your Ass. When Warhol refuses Solanas, decides to shoot him in order to put into practice the ideas of S.C.U.M.
This story becomes the starting point of the exhibition by Liliana Piskorska titled SCUM. The artist brings to life the fictional radical girlish militia, for which Valerie Solanas is the object of worship. This made up situation allows Liliana to create a hyperbolic tale, where the heroines become a kind of alter ego.
SCUM militants operate with surprise. Their identity is anonymous, their number is imprecise. They share intimate relationships. Undertake critical acts in relation to the entire artistic system. Their actions arise, as in Solanas, from a desire to overthrow the male domination. Acting on the margin, where nonnormativity is born, trying to destroy, what exists in the center. They do not like Andy Warhol, economically and politically privileged art, patriarchal and dusty institutions…
At the exhibition Liliana Piskorska uses the story of Valerie Solanas and Andy Warhol in order to provoke the story of exclusion and attempt to recover what for various reasons remain invisible. This event can also be used in a symbolic way, as the key to understanding the dichotomy between the centre and the periphery – two categories that shall always function in the the art world. Despite the fact that the main emphasis in the activities of SCUM refers to the artistic area, confabulation, which suggests the artist, may as well open in front of us a subversive game regarding the entire social order.
Liliana Piskorska (born 1988) – graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, where she is currently continuing their PhD studies. On ohe hand, in her works feminist threads appear, although more in the category of search of identity or pastiche (playing with ones image) and on the other hand, these actions are analytical and relating to the socio-cultural context. The field of her interests include topics related to corporeality, animality, power relations and subversive treatment of normativity and oneself. She lives in Torun.
